Hydroflyer Sport & Cruiser

John Philp on the Sport and John Partner on the Cruiser

A Report from the Foiling Frontier – Interview with Vasco Vellez, Founder of eFoilgc, the Foil School

Vasco Vellez, often called the “Super Coach” of Australia’s hydrofoiling scene, has spent the last decade at the edge of watersport innovation. Now, with the arrival of  the Hydroflyer models—Cruiser and Sport—he believes the  for future of personal watercraft for everyone is finally here.

“You don’t just ride it—you fly it,” Vellez says, cruising past on the Sport model in the crystalline waters of Currumbin Basin, Gold Coast.

From Innovation to Execution

The Hydroflyer, unlike traditional boards, incorporates advanced e-foil technology with design touches inspired by both surfing and aviation. It’s a vehicle that lifts you above the water, quite literally, using lift dynamics similar to airplane wings.

Four Points of Contact – The Handlebar Advantage

One feature that sets the Hydroflyer apart is its four-point contact system—your feet and both hands firmly engaged via the ergonomically designed handlebars. Vasco explains:

  1. Enhanced Stability: Distributes control across your body, reducing falls.
  2. Greater Control: Lets riders steer and balance with precision, even at speed.
  3. Faster Learning Curve: New users feel more secure, gaining confidence faster.
  4. Muscle Engagement: Encourages full-body posture, enhancing fitness and reducing fatigue.

“It’s like having the handlebars of a mountain bike in the water,” says Vasco. “You feel locked in, focused, and free.”

How does the Hydroflyer work?

The Hydroflyer uses a lithium-ion battery to power a virtually silent motor. A Bluetooth controller attached to the handlebars allows you to control speed. As you accelerate, the board’s hydrofoil lifts you above the water, creating a smooth and quiet ride.

Is the Hydroflyer suitable for beginners?

Yes, the Hydroflyer is designed with beginners in mind. Its stable design, optional handlebars, and intuitive throttle control make it easier to learn compared to traditional eFoils. Many users report standing up within their first session.

How easy is it to fall off, and what happens if I do?

Falling is a normal part of learning. The Hydroflyer is equipped with safety features like an automatic power cut-off when you release the throttle and a fully enclosed propeller to prevent injuries. Most riders find that falling becomes less frequent as they gain confidence.

How do I get back on if I fall off?

The Hydroflyer’s design makes remounting straightforward. Simply swim back to the board, grab the mast, and pull yourself up. The large, stable board and handlebars provide additional support to help you get back on quickly.

What makes the Hydroflyer different from other eFoils?

Unlike traditional eFoils, the Hydroflyer features a handlebar system that provides four points of contact, enhancing stability and control. Its design is inspired by motorcycles and personal watercraft, offering a unique riding experience.

Is the Hydroflyer environmentally friendly?

Yes, the Hydroflyer is 100% electric, producing no emissions or noise. It requires no fuel and can be recharged using a standard AC power outlet, making it an eco-friendly alternative to traditional gas-powered watercraft.
